Today the world recognizes World Oceans Day, a reminder that the ocean is far more than a beautiful place to visit—it is essential to life on Earth.

Our oceans cover most of the planet and quietly support humanity every single day. They produce much of the oxygen we breathe, provide food for billions of people, regulate climate, and support millions of jobs around the world. Healthy oceans are deeply connected to healthy communities.

Yet the marine environment faces growing challenges. Coral reefs are disappearing, fish populations are declining, and pollution and climate change continue to place enormous pressure on fragile ecosystems. In many areas, the ocean is struggling to recover as quickly as it is being impacted.

This year’s World Oceans Day theme encourages people everywhere to rethink their relationship with the sea and consider how daily choices affect the underwater world. Whether through conservation efforts, sustainable tourism, reducing waste, or supporting marine education, everyone can play a role in protecting the ocean for future generations.

For those of us who spend time on or beneath the water, the message is especially meaningful. Every healthy reef, every thriving marine species, and every clean shoreline is worth protecting.
