Belize Scuba Diving – Glover's Atoll and the Barrier Reef

With its warm waters and rich marine life, Belize scuba diving in the south is a diver’s paradise. In particular, the southern half of the Belize Barrier Reef and Glover’s Atoll offer some of the most pristine dive sites in the country. Furthermore, with fewer divers and snorkelers, these waters remain largely undisturbed. As a result, the Best of the South — Glover’s Atoll and the Belize Barrier Reef — are truly far from the maddening crowd.

Diving at Glover's Atoll

Glover’s Atoll is approximately 30 nautical miles from Placencia. The journey takes a little more than an hour and a half. However, the ride is certainly worth every minute. Some of the best Belize scuba diving in the Western Caribbean can be found here. In addition, conditions at Glover’s Reef make for some of the most enjoyable dive trips we offer. The atoll is an oval-shaped reef system, 15 miles long by 4 miles wide. Five islands lie on the eastern side, where most of the diving takes place. These islands are mostly private, with small diving and fishing resorts. Moreover, the pristine waters with unique coral formations and diverse marine life make Glover’s Reef a popular spot for divers. It is also one of UNESCO’s world heritage sites and a protected marine reserve with designated no-take and conservation zones.

The Belize Barrier Reef

The Belize barrier reef is the longest barrier reef in the western hemisphere, stretching 185 miles. As a result, it offers an enormous variety of dive sites to explore. South Water Caye Marine Reserve was established in 1996 to protect the outer reef. The cayes on the outer reef are abundant with aquatic life and pristine corals. Consequently, they represent some of the best snorkeling and scuba diving in the Caribbean. Nearby, Grand Channel within the same marine reserve features a dramatic cut in the Belize Barrier Reef system.
