Xunantunich Maya Temple and Inland Blue Hole

A Xunantunich Maya Temple tour takes you to a spectacular ruin perched atop a hill. Notably, it overlooks the Mopan River and the Cayo District, near the Guatemala border. In the Maya language, Xunantunich (pronounced shoo-nan-too-neech) means “Maiden of the Rock.”

First, cross the Mopan River west of San Ignacio on a vehicle ferry to reach Xunantunich. The main pyramid, known as El Castillo, ranks among the tallest buildings in Belize. Additionally, it rises 130 feet above the jungle canopy. As a result, climbing to the top with your licensed guide rewards you with spectacular views of the Cayo District and Petén Guatemala.

Xunantunich has six major plazas plus more than twenty-five temples and palaces. Above all, “El Castillo” (the Castle) stands out, rising 130 feet above the plaza. Furthermore, El Castillo features carved friezes on its east and west sides. The Maya carefully preserved the east frieze, and a fiberglass replica now covers the central mask that represents the sun god.
