Pompion Caye diving takes place on the Belize Barrier Reef, 20 miles east of Placencia in Southern Belize. First of all, this site boasts an abundance of aquatic life, fish stocks, coral reef biodiversity, and healthy corals. In addition, it’s a top spot for lionfish hunting. Moreover, Pompion Caye welcomes everyone from novice to advanced divers, making it one of the most versatile dive destinations in the region.

Trip Plan

This Pompion Caye diving trip is a two-tank boat dive trip that includes an authentic Belize-style picnic lunch on the boat during the surface interval. First, divers arrive at our dive center by 08:30 am for a 09:00 am departure. Then the boat ride takes about one hour each way. Finally, the trip returns at around 3:30 pm. Additionally, snorkelers often join this trip to explore the reef from the surface.

Dive Sites

Pompion Wall

Start this dive in about 30 feet/15 meters of water, then work your way down the slope to about 45 feet/14 meters where a sheer wall drops down a few thousand feet. Off the wall, the 70-foot/21-meter range offers plenty to see, because many crevices form a protective habitat. For example, you’ll often spot spiny lobsters, green moray eels, spider crabs, and hawksbill turtles hiding out. Additionally, colorful Caribbean reef fish swim on top of and along the wall. Occasionally, pelagic species such as king mackerel, wahoo, and smaller tuna appear in the blue water.

Pompion Canyons

The Pompion Canyon features an interesting formation of corals with plenty to offer. During this dive, you swim in and out of the grooves looking for the usual critters that rest and hide there. For instance, you’ll often encounter nurse sharks, southern and yellow stingrays, lobsters, and moray eels. In addition, schools of horse-eye jacks, schoolmasters, and grunts gather around huge spurs in the reef. Finally, you can swim this route north to south or south to north, depending on the current.
