Tuesday, July 14, 2026 is Shark Awareness Day, an opportunity to celebrate one of the ocean’s most important—and most misunderstood—marine animals.
Sharks have patrolled the world’s oceans for more than 400 million years, long before dinosaurs roamed the Earth. As apex predators, they play a vital role in maintaining healthy marine ecosystems by helping keep fish populations balanced and removing weak or unhealthy animals from the food chain.
Belize is fortunate to be home to a variety of shark species, including Caribbean reef sharks, nurse sharks, bull sharks, blacktip sharks, hammerheads, and, seasonally, the world’s largest fish—the whale shark. Most of these species pose little risk to people. In fact, many divers consider seeing a shark underwater to be one of the highlights of a trip to the Belize Barrier Reef.
At Splash Dive Center, divers and snorkelers frequently encounter friendly nurse sharks around Silk Cayes Marine Reserve, while certified divers occasionally see Caribbean reef sharks and other larger species at offshore destinations such as Glover’s Reef Atoll and South Water Caye. During the snapper spawning season from March through June, our Whale Shark Expedition offers the chance to witness the remarkable gathering of whale sharks at Gladden Spit—one of Belize’s most extraordinary natural events.
Belize has become a global leader in shark conservation. In 2021, the Government of Belize prohibited the commercial fishing of sharks and rays in its territorial waters, helping protect these remarkable animals and the health of the Belize Barrier Reef for future generations.
As we celebrate Shark Awareness Day, we encourage everyone to appreciate sharks for what they truly are: an essential part of a thriving ocean. By protecting sharks, we also protect the incredible reefs, fish, turtles, and countless other marine species that make Belize one of the world’s premier diving and snorkeling destinations.
