Belize’s Most Fascinating Land Animals
Jaguar
The jaguar is Belize’s largest wild cat and one of the country’s most iconic animals. Jaguars are solitary, elusive predators that require large areas of healthy forest. The Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary is internationally recognized for its importance to jaguar conservation and a great place for hiking and river tubing.
Baird’s Tapir
The Baird’s tapir, locally called the mountain cow, is Belize’s national animal and Central America’s largest land mammal. Tapirs are generally shy and are associated with forests, rivers, and wetlands. They are excellent swimmers and sometimes feed or rest near water.
Howler Monkeys
If you hear a deep roar coming from the forest, you may be listening to a black howler monkey. They are one of the 10 loudest animals on this planet. Monkey River, just south of Placencia, is a very good place to search for them.
Spider Monkeys
Geoffroy’s spider monkeys are highly agile animals that spend much of their lives in the forest canopy. Their long arms and prehensile tails make them exceptionally well adapted to moving between trees.
Belize’s Other Wild Cats
Belize is home to five species of wild cats: jaguar, puma, ocelot, margay and jaguarundi
The smaller cats are particularly elusive and are rarely seen by casual visitors.
Marine Mammals & Sea Turtles
Belize’s wildlife isn’t confined to the jungle. Some of the country’s most memorable encounters take place in the Caribbean Sea.
West Indian Manatee
The West Indian manatee is one of Belize’s most fascinating marine mammals. These gentle herbivores feed on aquatic vegetation in coastal waters, rivers, lagoons, and wetlands. Belize provides important habitat for manatees, particularly around seagrass beds and sheltered coastal areas such as Placencia Lagoon.
Dolphins
Bottlenose dolphins are regularly encountered in Belizean waters and sometimes swim alongside dive or snorkel boats.
A dolphin encounter is never guaranteed but seeing these intelligent and social animals in the wild can be unforgettable.
Sea Turtles
Three species of sea turtle are particularly important in Belize: Green turtle, Hawksbill turtle and Loggerhead turtle. Green turtles often feed in seagrass beds, while hawksbills are closely associated with coral reefs. Turtle and Nurse Shark
Whale Sharks & Sharks[
The whale shark is the largest fish in the world, and Belize is one of the places where these enormous filter feeders sometimes gather. Historically, whale sharks visited the waters around Gladden Spit during the seasonal snapper spawning aggregation where thousands of cubera, mutton, and dog snappers gather to reproduce, attracting predators from across the food chain. Whale shark sightings are less frequent in recent years, the spawning aggregation itself is an extraordinary wildlife event, with sharks, rays, dolphins, jacks, and barracuda often joining the spectacle.
Divers may encounter several species of sharks, including Caribbean reef sharks, nurse sharks, bull sharks and blacktip sharks. Sharks play an important role in maintaining healthy marine ecosystems and are an exciting part of diving and snorkeling in Belize.
Rays & Reef Wildlife
Belize’s coral reefs support an extraordinary variety of marine life.
Southern stingrays are commonly seen resting on sandy bottoms or searching beneath the sand for food.
With their distinctive spots and broad wings, spotted eagle rays are among the most beautiful animals encountered on Belize’s reefs.
Parrotfish are important reef herbivores. They scrape algae from the reef while feeding, helping keep coral surfaces healthy.
They also contribute significantly to the formation of tropical beach sand.
Moray eels often hide inside reef crevices with only their heads visible. Their constantly opening mouths can look threatening, but this is primarily part of how they breathe.
Octopus are masters of camouflage and can rapidly change their color and patterns. Finding one hiding among the coral is one of the rewards of slow, observant diving.
Other common reef residents include angelfish, butterflyfish, groupers, snappers, grunts, jacks, barracuda, lobsters, crabs, and seahorses.
Birds of Belize
Belize is an excellent destination for birdwatching because it contains an extraordinary variety of habitats.
The keel-billed toucan is Belize’s national bird. Its enormous, colorful bill makes it one of the country’s most recognizable birds. 
The brilliantly colored scarlet macaw is one of Belize’s most spectacular birds, with important habitat in southern Belize.
Ospreys are specialized fish hunters that can often be seen soaring above rivers, lagoons, and coastal waters before plunging feet-first to catch fish.
Depending on where you travel, you may also encounter herons and egrets, kingfishers, parrots, toucans, frigatebirds, gulls, pelicans, hawks and other raptors.
Coastal areas, wetlands, rainforest, and the Maya Mountains all offer different birdwatching opportunities.
