Laughing Bird Caye is one of the most popular inner reef snorkel destinations a short boat ride from Placencia and makes a great family excursion, with fun and adventure in one trip. Laughing Bird Caye is a National Marine Park, a World Heritage Site, and has an abundance and variety of coral habitats and marine life for snorkelers and scuba divers to explore.
Laughing Bird Caye Trip Plan
Snorkelers arrive at our dive center by 08:30 for a 09:00 am departure. The boat ride duration is about the 30-to-40-minutes. The trip gets back at around 3:30 pm.
Your licensed guide will take you on a tour of the abundant and varied coral and to meet the local residents. Critters include spotted drum, huge lobsters, cleaner shrimp, arrow crabs, snapper, barracuda, and more varieties of reef fish than you can count. On the east side of the island coral mounds separated by sandy patches rise to about 5 feet from the surface. These mounds have a variety of coral types which are home to lobsters, barracuda, lizardfish, angel fish, parrot fish, spotted drums, southern rays, and a myriad of reef fish.
On the west side, your guide will find lobster, barracuda, lizardfish, Nassau grouper, angel fish, furry sea cucumbers, conch, and lots and lots of colorful juvenile reef fish. Around mid-day, you’ll enjoy an authentic Belizean-style picnic lunch or a barbecue and relax on the beach after getting your fill of the beauty of the underwater world of Laughing Bird Caye. Then head back into the water for some more exploration and you may even have time to circumvent the caye. There are lots of areas with healthy corals and abundant aquatic life to check out before heading back to Placencia.
